What is Cyber Essentials Basic?

Cyber Essentials Basic (CE) is a simple but effective, Government backed scheme that will help you to protect your organisation, whatever its size, against a range of the most common cyber attacks.

If your organisation would like to bid for central government contracts, which involve handling sensitive and personal information, you will require a Cyber Essentials Basic certification at the very least.

Benefits of a Cyber Essentials Basic Certification

There are many benefits to being awarded a Cyber Essentials Basic certificate. It shows your current and prospective clients that you take cybersecurity seriously and may allow your business to bid on various additional contracts. Many large public and private sector organisations have clearly listed Cyber Essentials Basic as an essential pre-requisite for all of their suppliers.

Having a Cyber Essentials Basic certificate can assure businesses that their current defensive capabilities should protect them against the most common cyber attacks. As the Cyber Essentials scheme is backed by the UK government, your organisation will be listed on the National Cyber Security Centre’s website, showing your suppliers that you are taking the security of their data seriously.

Our Engagement Lifecycle

A typical Cyber Essentials Basic assessment will follow the following engagement lifecycle.

Our aftercare service allows your organisation to have access to a team of experienced consultants who can assist you in satisfying your future cybersecurity requirements.

Step 1 - Platform

Ruptura InfoSecurity will create your organisation an account on a simple to use Cyber Essentials platform.

Step 2 - Self Assessment

You will then go through the questions within the platform, answering them to the best of your knowledge about your organisation.

Step 3 - Marking

Once submitted, Ruptura InfoSecurity will then assess the answers to the questions against a government approved mark scheme.

Step 4 - Retesting

If unsuccessful, Ruptura InfoSecurity will advise on the issues and will provide a free re-assessment within 5 working days.

Step 5 - Certification

Once successful, Ruptura InfoSecurity will issue a Cyber Essentials Basic certificate to your organisation. This will also be visible on the NCSC website.

Step 6 - Aftercare

A reminder will be sent for 1 years time to renew the certification.

Our consultancy team will then take over to assist you with any further cyber security requirements.

Five Key Areas of Security for Cyber Essentials Basic Certification

Malware protection

All devices that access business data need protection against viruses and malware attacks

Firewall

All devices must be connected to the internet via a firewall. This will help prevent unauthorised access to data

User access control

Users should only have access to software, settings, applications and data they need to perform their role

Secure configuration

Software and application settings need to be monitored and secured, so attackers do not gain access to important data

Software updates

Software and operating systems should be up to date to protect them against the exploitation of known vulnerabilities

The differences between Cyber Essentials BASIC and Cyber Essentials PLUS

Cyber Essentials Basic is a self-assessment, and Cyber Essentials Plus is a verified version of it. For Basic certification, you need to be able to answer a questionnaire in which you certify that you have implemented the five controls that we mentioned above.

For Plus certification, an external security assessor tests and carries out a vulnerability scan of your external and internal devices. Thus, their robustness to hacking is confirmed, and your compliance with all points of technical control is proved.
